Why we choose tungsten carbide inserts

Speaking to woodworking, we may associate it with the handicraftsman. With a specially tool in hands, the craftsman worked hardly in the workshop, and sweat dripped down from his forehead to the wood he’s processing. However, we are living in the 21st century. Most of the work has no longer needed to be done with human force. There are machines with higher efficiency and higher precision can produce more projects and save the costs.

But how these machines cut the woods? We can watch it on television, and with waves of tremoring and some noisy sound there comes the finished woods. We actually don’t know how these woods comes out. If you’ve ever looked closely, you can find there are small pieces of knives loaded on the machines.

What are they?

We call them tungsten carbide inserts, and now they are used in the wood processing machines. But it doesn’t mean we have only one choice. In fact, years ago there’s a kind of flat knife which are popular among producers. But why we can hardly see the traditional flat knife in the factory or in personal workshop?

There are reasons.

  1. These tungsten carbide cutting knives for wood will not produce burn marks on the cutting surface, but traditional flat knives will. When it has been using for a long time and it’s cutting edge is getting blunt, or when the feed is temporarily stopped, the cutting heat will remain burn marks on the surface.
  2. Traditional flat knife has a bad performance in temperature distribution, and when the tool getting hot in its working, the cutting edge will also sustain higher heat, and the passivation speed will be improved, which may cause the tool lose its original stability. But none of those carbide blades with aluminus alloy blade body will have these problems. These tungsten carbide inserts with better heat dissipation have indicated the stability and promised a longer service life.
  3. Small blades loaded on spiral cutterhead will produce smaller wood chips, which means you can easily discharge the wood chips away from the wood surface. But traditional flat knives is prone to produce large signs of damage on the wood. Due to its large force area, traditional flat knives is easy to form cutting deformation, and will give you a ragged cutting surface.

So why we choose tungsten carbide inserts for wood cutting?

All in all, there are too many advantages make us to choose tungsten carbide inserts for woodworking. There may be some people who are using traditional knives still think traditional knives are better. I can’t agree more with that. But with the progress of times and the development of science and technology, more things will be out-dated. Not because they don’t have advantages, but there are better choice for us.
